Unfiltered Affection By: Deidre Gibbs

his words were the slap in the face

that was heard across different states

she never cried just breath in deeper as she stood waiting for more

more of his blows she waited for

she believed if he cared like he said he show it and took his anger as love

as he threw her heart to the floor

never saying he was sorry

she always wanted more

more from him because she saw the good when her bruises healed that people never saw

because even when she vented all they saw was love

not knowing the love she got was abusing and confusing

he new he had her heart

and could get want he wanted

from the start

so he made it very clear that when he gone too far that he was sorry

but new he be back at it by morning

she would still be there smiling hoping and praying

that what she wanted would be there

others saw it

she just wanted to live it…experience it with him

not as others but as what they were silence meant

she waited in horror wondering if she was going to see tomorrow

with him

she rather his anger than nothing

hate for love

confusion for compassion

being used for acceptance

but she never showed him her anger…not till that blow was too great

her dreams vanished from that final blow

she couldn’t hold back as the hurt showered down her face

and countries felt the pain of loss she felt but in the end

she still wanted him back

wanted to feel his pain

wanted to feel his dreams

wanted to be where they were headed to be despite his blows

she wanted him back

she wanted what she new was true

true he could be an asshole but he was still true to being original with her

that’s something she was always looking for no matter what he was

true she new what she was getting into

but still never gave up on him

like so many did to her

she wanted him back

she got him and he gave her everything she wanted

everything she longed for he gave her him

now her soul is dearly departed

because she wanted him back

took what he gave for the sake of her version of love

family

her serenity

she is at peace because she got to see him at his best

if I know her even in heaven

she wish he was there

because she saw the best in him

and in her mind he belonged there

Flowers for the lady By: Gentlemen S. J. Spiphy

Flowers for the lady with the weighty heart

The beautiful Miss missing the charismatic kisses and composed caresses that blesses away

the distresses of being neglected or perhaps alone

The fair maiden who’s laden with the burden of having no of her own but remains strong Well fashioned with her chastity belt well fastened until her noble groom comes along.

Flowers for that lady Flowers for the lady bearing the bereavement of death by a thousand lies Who cries a million tears through her disguise as she meagerly toggles between resentment and clemency Her husband’s tendency to cloak

his infidelity out weights his good intentions Thus sacrificing the harmony of their relationship to the weeds grown from the insidious seeds of dissension Flowers for that lady Flowers for the lady found bound by the insurmountable debt of losing her love, after using her love to restitute the insolvent spirit

of this man who poses as her king But bears no ring to validate all the virtue she’s given. Faithfully living a dour reality beneath the fantasy of one day becoming his legitimate bride, his covenant queen Flowers for that lady Flowers for the lady, whose honor has been disgraced, beauty misplaced, body exploited and intelligence ignored

Bored to the point of disgust with his lust and meaningless attraction to everything but her except who she is, what she feels, and how she thinks; her personal perfections, corrections as oppose to her frivolous flaws and kinks

Flowers for that lady

Flowers for the lady,

those of every color, culture, and creed that struggle fight and bleed to diligently meet the need recommended by the survival of the fittest for the best interest of her family without that paper husband chosen by the government for assistance Despite social and economically resistance her spiritual integrity continues to produce patience and persistence to keep pressing towards the mark of a higher calling and a better success, accepting nothing less Flowers for all of the ladies, keep praying, keep staying, keep trusting God and may you forever be blessed.

To Be Yours… By: Ami Brown

To be your dime
To be your wife
To be your lady
To be your bitch
To be your dick sucking slut on the late night….

Don’t know why nothing would make me more pleased than to bath you &  watch you air dry on my knees….loving you down as we please….
I would rub your manhood with coconut oil
Press almond butter into your upper body….
Taste you
Tease you
Nothing more than to please you..
A little hunny on my clit for when you want something sweet for your lips.
69 in between time & time again we bust nuts on each others chin…..
1.2.3.4 hundred lifetimes before
My ancient future  lover and I
only stop to begin again…

“Dressed Up”

God says that he dresses the flowers that only last but for a short time, and we are much more than the flowers…so will he not adorn us in beauty as well? So why do we keep trying to dress ourselves…with misleading charm, deceit, promiscuity, and a bunch of non-virtues that taint the image of a woman, and conceal who we really are, who God created us to be. He looks to us in disappointment, asking why we ever felt like his wardrobe for us wasn’t good enough. He dressed us in virtue and we replaced it with foolishness, he dressed us in righteousness and we replaced

it with wretchedness, he dressed us in beauty and we replaced it with unwarranted insecurity..It’s like we’ve taken off our value and replaced it with nothingness, and we compensate by seeking power through seduction and manipulation, letting Satan transform our hearts to favor that of Jezebel’s…like we’re naked in the garden of Eden like Eve, all of the worst parts of us, tattooed to our souls by this world, exposed with a bad attempt to cover them up with makeup, jewelry, and fancy clothes.

How could we look in the mirror and like what we see, yet hate what we’ve become…we move so fast, we have no time for healing, and so we settle in concealing our blemishes with self-justification, denial, and a disposition of defensiveness…But God can see us #nofilter. And yet he STILL loves us. When will we come back to him and let him adorn us once again with his grace and the beauty that only he gives…from the inside out. Healing all the scars that we seek to cover and giving us no more reason to hide. Clothing us with strength and dignity…striding in wisdom,

raising our spirits higher than the heels we walk in. With confidence in him, rather than in our ever-wardrobe-changing, malfunctioning selves. Giving us stability so that we can continue to walk with him and stop falling to our faces in self-afflicted pain.  Crowned with God’s beauty and ravishing in his treasures. The world’s beauty is fleeting and temporary; God’s beauty brings honor and is everlasting. What will you allow to adorn you?

Sleeping on the Moon By: Roshanda Johnson

You and I

With open eyes

Pray the Lord our souls to keep

After we pray

Let’s slip away

Soon as the house is fast asleep

Put on your robe

Tip on your toes

Gently to the roof we’ll climb

And we both know

Where we will go

I’ll take your hand and you’ll take mine

Let’s lift  our arms

Embrace life’s charm

Up and away we will fly free

Through the stars

And around Mars

To a place made just for you and me

We’ll dance and sing

On Saturn’s rings

Jupiter is the place to play

We’ll split between us

A cake on Venus

With frosting from the Milky Way

Let’s do judo

Up on Pluto

Drink milk shakes on Jupiter’s moons

Let’s take a sail

On a comet’s tail

Then ice skate all across Neptune

We’ll sight see

On Mercury

Then morning will be coming soon

When you and I

Get sleepy eyes

We’ll go to sleep on God’s great moon

Sister’s View

Sisters view : Respect

There was once a time when a woman wanted to be treated like a woman and not like a broad, bitch, or slut. The
new generation of woman though doesn’t care about respect or status they are more worried about appealing to the

opposite sex and how they respond to them. Women no longer care if they appear loose or easy, they are only wor-
ried about snatching a man with deep pockets. These women also are searching to marry above their status or at

least in the lifestyle in which they are accustomed to. They don’t care if it is a drug dealer or a NBA player who has
just been drafted, as long as they have access to their money. These women will down play their upbringing and
their pedigree to fit in with these types of men lifestyle. As women we usually take a back seat to our men and let
them shine, but in the new world order women are running the household and still working.
Women are fighting other women over men in public and also in their private homes. The internet hasn’t helped this
aspect of relationships, if anything it has made relationships harder to manage. Social networks have made some
women believe in relationships that didn’t exist and they have also broken up homes because it allows for millions of
people to become involved in relationships that they are not part of. Men have also failed to keep up their role as a
man. Not just a man in a relationship, but as a man who stands for something besides the size of his bank account
or the size of the appendage in his pants. Women are pushing good men out of the household in order to keep up
with their friends and what they consider is a good enough man for them. When did paying the bills, loving another
person, providing those needs which no one else can fulfill for a person become not enough. A man or woman who
has a good relationship that has the potential to become a great relationship will not put in the extra work because

society has shown them that the old ways are outdated. There are less couples getting married today and more chil-
dren growing up in broken homes. No one truly understands the effects of their actions on children who didn’t ask to

come into this world. Mothers it is just as much your responsibility as a man’s, if you don’t want children act respon-
sibly. Men if you know the woman you are seeing is not the kind of woman you would like to have children with then

you should cut your ties and not lead her on like a real man would or at least act responsibility. For if no one re-
spects themselves how can they expect anyone else to show them any respect.

Black men and women the same way the communities come together when there is a clear threat formed against it,

that same love should be shown everyday where you live because those are your neighborhoods. You can’t com-
plain about what is being taken from you if you are giving it away. We can’t depend on only our NBA or NFL stars to

come back to the old neighborhoods and give back, we need those who are there every day to show the youth in our
neighborhoods there are positive black men and women. Children learn respect four places; home, school, church,
and the streets, you have to control what your child is taking in. I believe the old saying “it takes a village to raise
children,” but you want to make sure it’s the right village. Those single parent homes need the extra help, but without

all the judgment that government resources usually enforce on them. Little girls need to be taught that they are pre-
cious and not just a plaything for boys. Little girls are dreaming of snatching up the richest man they can find and

they don’t care who or what they have to step on to get there. Society is showing them that this acceptable with the
numerous television shows and the need for material things. We need to stop letting television and the internet raise
our children. Something’s are not meant for everyone and we need to put our foot down and take more control over
what our children see. Times have changed but to throw away everything from the past would be a cruel injustice.
Respect yourself and you will learn to respect others.

Brother’s View

Something About Purpose

Until we share our deepest fears or strongest desires we are mere shells of ourselves. Maybe the day will come
when we talk of our innermost wants but today is not that day. At this particular juncture the theme is purpose. How
many times have we sat thinking vision clear, target acquired; then someone we love, someone we trusted with our
being told us – no, not that. Your goals are too high. What if you fail. Then began to tell of others they were acquainted
with who suffered from falls similar to the one they have already predicted for us. This could be their version of the
protective shield of love they covered us in. Reminiscent of plastic on sofa’s to keep them stainless. We all know
whether used or unused time has a way of leaving its mark.

I prefer sometimes to use analogies: Let’s say I’m walking toward my given destination and the road less taken is now
covered by a baseball field? I would rather not play games, so I walk the trail still slightly marked if you look hard
enough. Long before I reach the diamond it seems no one has traveled this way since the mighty oaks were young.
As I stroll aimlessly across the diamond there is a pick up baseball game. In my approach everyone begins to yell go
to first! Hey! Go to first! I look around knowing all the while I’m not playing, so what do I do. Normally if not focused I
would listen to the cry of the masses and take first base leaving my destiny unattainable. I on the other hand always
hope I could be the one to yell back. This trail was here before the diamond….. I’m just passing through! I can’t afford
to lose my place again! and continue with my forward progress.

Here we are members of everything streaming; MySpace, Twitter, You Tube, Facebook, Tagg, Mingle City, Reverb
Nation, Black Planet, Linked In, Instagram, every Greet-Up and Meet-Up internet site our friends send us links to. I

have to believe you are here with the same purpose I wear like loose gloves, hoping to somehow by accident or os-
mosis find a way to propel my dreams higher than I could toss them myself. This is the place. Right here and now, not

a second early or a minute late I believe we were meant to be at this time. Together we possess the ability not to do
the same as other individuals but so much more. We only have a small window to make up our minds if we are a
group, a unit or to remain on this journey alone. I must admit I can’t do it on my own. I need everyone who ever closed
one eye to get a better look at a dream only they were able to see. Maybe you are not yet a believer, don’t worry as
we grow; we all enter the realm of understanding that nothing beats a failure but a try. So help me to help you and
together we can make this vision of a united Family of Artist a formidable force in what ever area you live in. Not just
for slam or open mics all performance venues, including all forms of the art.

I thank you for reading, if you are surly like me wanting this to be more than a mere stop in our never ending search
for purpose. We may not be in control of much, but we do control our mouse clicks. Each and every one of us is just

one click away from being noticed. The world wide web has endowed us with the marketability to reach a global audi-
ence. We possess the power to move past the usual circles we run in just by clicking. There are enough television

shows depicting the funny and the senseless. Their usual occurrence of a million hits on YouTube, and hundreds of
thousands of like clicks has me baffled. While the conscious videos never have many viewers at all. We can change
this or rather we have to change this. There is something about purpose making me understand we have no option

but to. There is something about the way we sound as we move forward, soldieristically marching, giving us motivation, energy and strength to keep going. The sound of progress has only one motion……… forward ONLY.

passions

Doing what god meant me to do. Making something out of nothing. Music. Helping people reach their full potential.

why the name Too Deep?

Its actually spelled DJ II D.E.E.P and its an acronym, To Disintegrate Evil Educate People; but it has various meanings
in various situations.

Why make mix tapes?

Several reasons. It is a way to introduce new artist, sounds, and concepts to people. For a dj, it can be a platform for
unabashed expression. You can play a song exactly when, where and how you choose. Even with all the controversy,
there’s still money to be made via mixtapes. And for businesses, its an excellent “out of the box” way to promote. To
me, its right next to the T Shirt as far as best ways to promote your business from a grass roots level. If people like
your cd, they have your commercial. If people burn it or steal it, they steal your commercial with it. Lastly, its an excellent way for djs to market themselves and stay relevant.

What do you believes makes you stand out?

First and foremost because I remain to be the individual god made me. So many people in life( and especially in the industry ) desire to be carbon copies when the reality is, at best Id be a parade brand DJ Khaled. However, he could never do II D.E.E.P better than II D.E.E.P.
I am a person of and for the people. With that being said, yes I am a hustler, but there are some things I
will not trade for a dollar. My name has to stay “UGK” in the streets. Meaning, when you hear my name it
must evoke thoughts of legitimacy and consistent dependability.
As a dj( which is what I’m most known for ) I am set apart by the fact that I’m an actual artist/mc. So when I
dj I tie songs together by not only tempo but sometimes by what’s said in the song. When new artist bring
me music, if there’s something wrong with the song I can usually tell them what it is where the average dj is either gonna say its hot or its not. And as a club MC, since I can actually rap all my ad libbing and paraphrasing has a musicians timing. Sometimes to the point where people say stuff I said in the club when they hear the song anywhere else. Lastly, I have my own way of speaking and my own slang. 8 times out
of 10 you’ve heard someone say one of my phrases and didn’t know it came from me. Like “Income Tax Baller”.

Tell me about RBI promotions

RBI promotions is a company started by myself and a select group of friends a few years ago to promote
events, goods, services and music. Although we are most known for the “PLAYAS GET CHOSE PISCES
PAJAMA PARTY

What made you create P.A.P?

I didn’t create P.A.P…….lol. That’s the creation of a friend of mine, Mrs. Sonia Parker. I have collaborated
with her on several occasions. My sister-n-grind ( FIYA aka FAT ALBERTA ) introduced me to her. I was
looking for an organization that would allow me to deal with/ donate directly to the people. Alot of so
called charitable organizations are more concerned with making the money stick to the gum under the
table.

Why stay in Houston when you know there are other states where artist have a easier time getting noticed?

Wow… good question! lol… First and foremost, everyone starts out with a vision. What they want to accomplish and how they want to do it. There’s several times I considered moving to Atlanta. Why didn’t I?

1) Because making starting here for me is just as important as making it. Its gotta go in this order: Jensen

Park / Trinity Garden / Northside / Houston / Texas then beyond. Making it for me is not just being financially successful, but planting or replanting seeds in the city to make sure my city can eat long after arthritis wont let me dj and I’ve progressed to something else.

2) My bro ( DJ YOUNG S.A.M.M ) asked me not too, lol. TrillTalk

What’s the motivation for everything that you do?

Doing what god said. Becoming the financial cornerstone for everyone with my last name, like Duponts
and Rockafeller’s. Setting a new mark of progress for myself, every time.

What is something that people would be surprised to know about you?

  1. I’ve been reading on a college level since 3rd grade.
  2. 2. I’ve been hustling my whole life. When I used to go trick-or-treating, Id eat 3 pieces of it and sell
the rest of the full grocery bag.
  3. I’ve literally saved lives, I once saved a baby from getting hit by a car.
God keeps placing me in positions to save people.

What are your views when it deals with continuing arts in our schools? Should they stay or continue to be taken out of schools due to budgets?

I learned how to count musically in school. I think that music and art gives kids a vision of what goes on
or what they could achieve outside of the ghetto. There’s so many people out there doing music in so
many ways, maybe they should explore alternate means. I wouldn’t mind volunteering, and i know I’m not
the only one. But on the flipside…..the last time they took music/art out of schools, hip hop was born. And I don’t know where Id be without hip-hop. Because I was never meant to have a 9 to 5. And all the entrepreneurs where I’m from sell dope.

If you could create a concert tour who would be in your line up and why?

LL Cool J( the reason I rap ), Krino( most underrated Houston rapper, excluding nobody ), UGK( R.I.P
Chad L Butler ), Beatking( The new and improved Lil Jon ), Papa Rue( most original I’ve ever heard in
Houston and he has a vault full of unreleased Gems ), BDBO( thats my team and there’s limitless talent in my camp), DJ II D.E.E.P( Have you heard me, lol), Zro( Top 3 in Houston period ), Candi Redd( Best female I ever heard out of Houston ), KEKE and FAT PAT( You have to put them together because they were at their best when they were pushing each other lyrically), CHAMILLIONAIRE AND PAUL WALL
( Together, they were unstoppable). I can go forever on that 1….lol

What is one question you wish people would ask you?

All the shit people assume about me. Ask me. Im different…plain and simple. So 8 out of 10 times you’re
gonna be wrong if you assume about me. So just ask.

If you could speed up time 10 years from now and look back what do you hope to see?

Entertainment / Hip-hop hubs: NY, CA, ATL, HOU 2. My family is straight 3. My daughter picked up where I left off. 4. DJs respected in Houston. 5. Four Critically Acclaimed fiction novels and a children’s book series 4. 3 Critically acclaimed albums 6. Being saved( Number 1 on my list ). 7. 4 Movies written/directed by me

why Tuesday?

The event came together by chance. The owner was looking for a performance based event to replace “Real Talk Tuesdays”
at Mr. A’s, which was primarily a poetry event. I didn’t want to try to duplicate what my O.G.( Black Snow ) had created, so I
decided instead to create what is now “SHOW & PROVE”.

How long has it been running?

For roughly 3 yrs.

What area of Houston is it located?

It started at The Mac Bar( 13105 Veterans Memorial )
What are the aspects of this event that stands out from other events?
It gets results. If you are serious about your craft; and have the material to back it, you are guaranteed to leave enriched
by the “S&P” experience. It is also one of few events where up and comers get opportunities to rub shoulders with successful people in various aspects of entertainment. This includes radio artist, video directors, managers, musicians, photographers, play writes, authors, and venue owners.

Describe the show.

It is unique in virtually every way. The 1st half is the Open Mic. The 2nd half is the Showcase. Every first Tuesday
we present independent videos that are aired in the venue over the clubs system. The 4th Tuesday the best artist
of the last 3 weeks perform for cash and a marketing and promotion package. I ( DJ II D.E.E.P ) am the host. The
Co-Host is a very talented RnB vocalist by the name of Tashay Wiggins. She was featured on the RnB mixtape
“Red Heels N D Air II”. Providing the soundtrack is one of the newest members of DJZNDAHOOD, DJ LOKO. He is
also a talented producer. E Lew and the 3PEmages crew will be providing photographic coverage and sponsor a
free photo shoot for the finale winners.

Do you have any other events besides Tuesdays?

I have several projects in the works. In September I do an event called “Sucker Free September” which is
geared towards introducing new music and community service. In October I will be doing the 2nd Annual
“BARBERS & STYLIST BASH” geared toward celebrating barbers, stylist, nail technicians and make up
artist. In December I will be doing the 3rd annual “GREAT CAKE EXCHANGE” toy drive. Other events to
be announced.

Is this the type of venue that would fit book signings to release parties to stage plays?

Yes. I want this to be an avenue for all serious artist, be it vocal or visual. Vendors of all types are welcome as
well. My goal is that if you are serious about what you do as an artist and are lacking in any area, this will be the pool of resources to dive into. We are open to exhibitions,album/cd/mixtape/ book release events, company/website/product launch parties and more.

What do you want your event to stand for when people leave it & talk about
it to someone who has never been?

I want the artist to feel they were made better by participating. I want this to be one of the remedies for the ailments of the Houston entertainment infrastructure. I want the audience to feel as though they didn’t pay enough for what they saw. I want this event to be the launching pad for some of the best future entertainers this city
has to offer.

What do you want people to remember about the event that will always make your show stand out?

I want them to remember that DJ II D.E.E.P cared about the artist and the hype was real.

Describe the type of artist your show brings to the stage.

Show and Prove is geared towards Singers, Poets, MCs, and Comedians.

How affordable is it to book at the location?

The owner and I have an understanding, lol.

Duece (The Green Eyed Munsta) &Yiego (Get Your Girl Quick)

Ages: 25 and 26

Talents: Singers

Live: Houston, TX

Achievements: Greatest achievement is we had the opportunity to perform in front of 100’s of  Houston homeless at a super bowl party just for them.

Interest: Music, Laughter, Entertainment

Motivation: People

What made you want to create the group?

Yiego: It wasn’t something we just came up with. It really just kinda happened. I came into  the group after it was already created and I guess we’ll just say the strong survive.

How did you and your partner meet?

Duece: I came into the group after it was already created and I guess we’ll just say the  strong survive.

 Why the name VX?

Yiego: The Vx means a lot but ultimately it means The Versatile Experience. We’ve always  wanted to leave people feeling like they’ve experienced something different.

How would you describe your style?

Duece: Very Awkward! 🙂 We are like ying and yang two totally different type of styles that  actually harmonize together perfectly.

What message do you try to give out through your music?

Duece: Anything is possible! Anything! Through God who strengthens you.

Where is the one place you want to travel to and why?

Yiego: Space. I want to see what earth looks like from the outside. Duece : Agreed

What is the hardest and positive aspect of being a duo?

Duece: Hardest part is wanting to sing that 3 to 4 part harmony live and can’t cause it’s 2 of  us. The most positive part aspect is we only have to worry about 2 people showing up on time.

What do you see for your partners future and what do you think he see for you?

Yiego: I think Duece will become one of the greatest writers/film directors ever. And I think  he knows I will become the first man in history to learn how to levitate.

If you could bring anyone into your group who would be on your wish list?

Duece: Janel Monae, because she is super dope. Her style and music match something we  plan to dabble in!

What advise would you give to someone wanting to do what you do?

Yiego: Don’t listen to people and their opinions of what you should do. Do whats in your heart.

What is people might be surprised to know about you & your partner?

Duece: Were not Gay. LOL Na probably that I’m actually a really shy dude and Yiego is a true  computer nerd.

What is the hardest part of the process to get you where you are today that if you could get where you are now without doing it you would you and why?

Yiego: I don’t believe we would change a thing. That process helps you have longevity, so I  guess we wish we would of known then what we know now.

Nurses

And you thought your job was hard

Not to undermine what it is you do for a living

But all things considered…..

Think about the Alaskan crab fisherman

tasked with hauling in nets and cages

weighing hundreds of pounds in zero degree weather

while the sky is leaking melting ice

skating on decks covered with frozen water

aboard a boat being tossed on a feuding sea

Lend your imagination to the coal miners

Whose cubicle is this dark, damp, desolate corner office space

filled with noisy yet seductive accidents

waiting to breast feed coal dust

to your black lungs until chest implausibly explodes

Who wants to walk to work with a mercenary?

This freelance fighter for misappropriated fortune

will willingly remove you from this walk of life

then auction off his illuminatic soul

for this monetary evil rooted so deeply in his employers pocket

he couldn’t reach it if he started from the bottom

Parents go ahead and tell your children

they can grow up and become president

of these divided states of America

make sure you teach them the illusion of multitasking

that way with his or her mortician like schedule of policing the world planning wars and rumors of ending wars while politicking over peace treaties they don’t become so credulous to 3rd world countries that they appear impotent

in their own domestic affairs all these jobs are extremely dangerous

but have you ever just sat and thought how difficult it must be to be a nurse?

A Substandard one, let alone a good one some may think being a nurse

couldn’t possibly compare with all the aforementioned occupations

but how good would your poker face be?

Sitting in with a Stage Four cancer patient planning their Christmas dinner in the month of May

when they’ve been given 12 weeks

with a 3 day grace period to live!

or a 8yr old girl whose body

has rejected 2 livers already a 3rd one is not an option but

all she can talk about is her sweet 16 birthday party and

you’ve been invited

I know you think doctors have it hard but no

all doctors have to do is fix you then task the nurse with telling you

when you can’t be fixed imagine the weight of the burden’s they carry

walking in that delivery room the bearer of bad news to a barren woman of 47 yrs

the doctors done all they could but couldn’t save either baby

when she only asked God for 1 By definition

nurses are only to promote good health and prevent illness

Not prevent death but some of these angelic like creatures

tackle their 12hr shifts

as if they can Trading in heavenly wings

for a pair of scrubs a stethoscope and some band-aids

Caring too much to allow you to see them sweat

so they’re constantly holding back

tears camouflaged as perspiration Selling their salvation

with every white lie they tell to make good on a bad check

between practitioner and patient and they’re just waiting….

not for accolades or accomplishments

Just simple recognition they exist I’ve spent a night or 2 with more than a few so when I get to heaven

and God and I converse I’ll be sure to tell him

Thank You for sending my guardian angel

in the form of a nurse!

Souls

Life is a trip! Or Am I tripping?

Not knowing where I’m going but I’m packed

Packed in a Society where the Political figures

pose as GOD but now they use government halls as churches

Where it’s illegal to pray to GOD

unless its terrorist season you’re draped in an American flag

and just buried every and anybody you’ve ever loved

A society baptized in discrimination! the only reason you got that job is  ‘cuz that Fortune 500 company is trying to meet their TOKEN quota

So yeah

they bombard you with fake grins become fake friends making you think you fit in then you go  and bleach’ yo skin turning ‘yo back on ‘yo kin……

Then you up and get fired reason being you lied on your application when you were hired  Saying “you said you were black!” Now how about that?

But the fact is

self is everybody’s worst enemy hell I know first hand ‘cuz even I’m afraid of what’s in me!  Whether it be GOD or the devil GOOD or bad

black or white…

it won’t let my soul settle If it’s the devil look how many girls I’ve deceived

how many times I’ve said I LOVE U with my fingers crossed and made them believe! If it’s  white I can’t rest until I get a six figure job a house, a wife, PLUS a secretary about three disrespectful kids a gang ‘a credit cards then commit suicide!

If it’s black all I want to do is blame the white man for holding me back  never apply for a job have seven kids by six different women

sell drugs, get a fresh ride smoke weed and hycide…..but if it’s God

the world gone be surprised ‘cuz ya’ll waitin’ on the Heavens to fall

and HE got a representative rite b4 ‘yo eyes! So be careful of the words you speak, ’cuz you  never know the UNSETTLED SOUL!

It may reach!

Dana Jackson

Since the 90’s, Dana Jackson has been setting trails ablaze on the Houston Music scene. Many know Dana as
“Houston’s Only Singing DJ” for Houston’s #1 Urban AC radio station, KMJQ-Majic 102.1. Others know her as the
voice of the 4-time world champion WNBA Houston Comets. But Dana is most known as being one of the most popular and sought after artists in the Houston area……
Dana realized her true calling and began singing at local talent shows and open mics which lead to an opportunity to perform on the nationally televised TV show, “It’s Showtime at the Apollo”. There, she won 3 times singing and rap-ping Mary J. Blige’s “Love No Limit”. That was Dana’s swift introduction to the New York music scene. She moved there for a short time and really began to hone her skills
as an entertainer performing at legendary open mics and showcases at places like Chaz And Wilson’s, Nell’s and Sylvia’s. She watched and learned from talents like Carl Thomas, Blu Cantrell, Gordon Chambers, Mike Phillips,
Melonie Daniels and others. All of whom got their start on that very same New York open mic scene. It was prime training ground for the eager entertainer.

Can you give some insight to those that don’t know anything about Radio One?

Dana: There is not a whole lot I can tell you about Radio One. I did work for them but I haven’t been in radio since 2008. I
still have associates that work for Radio One.

What has kept you in Houston since your hometown is Detroit?

Dana: I was born in Detroit, Mich. but I was mostly raised in Houston. Went to High school and college here. Houston is home now. To be quite honest, Detroit is not a good place to be right now. In fact, a lot of my family in the last few
years have migrated to Houston as well. Economically, Houston is one of the best cities to live in right now. That’s
not to say that one day I won’t consider living somewhere else. I would, pending the right opportunity. I’ve worked
hard to build a following in Houston, but I would love to do expand beyond Houston.

When did you realize singing was your passion?

Dana: For as long as I can remember, I’ve had a passion for singing and music. I got it honest! My father was a singer and
songwriter

How long have you been performing?

Dana: I have been performing since 1992. I’ve been a professional singer since 1996.

Besides singing what do you think you would be known for?

Dana: In high school, I was a really good basketball player. I went to a Division 1 school on a basketball scholarship. Had I not pursued music and had the WNBA started a few years earlier, I would have been trying to play professional basketball. Every time I run into someone from my childhood or from high school, they all thought I was going to play pro basketball.

How do you juggle your life as a artist and just being Dana?

Dana: Juggling my life is not as hard now as it used to be. I’ve gotten used to it. When I’m onstage, I’m Dana Jackson. When I’m at home, I’m just DJ. My friends and family all respect what I do but I’m not Dana Jackson to them! Just DJ. I realize that people who don’t know me personally may have certain opinions or expectations. I try just try to be
myself at all times and treat people with the same respect that I expect in return.

What would be your dream tour? who would be on it with you and why?

Dana: Wow, my dream tour? That’s a hard question because there are so many artists that I admire. But personally, I would want to share the stage with Maroon 5, Ceelo Green because of the large audiences they draw and the energy and diversity of the music. I would love to tour with Lalah Hathaway and Rahsaan Patterson because they are 2 of my favorite independent artist who I have mad respect for. I would also would love to tour with Angie Stone and D’Angelo. I think that show would be crazy hot! Energy, creativity and great music! Any of these choices would be
more than dream come true for me.

Why do you think we should keep music in schools?

Dana: Music and the Arts, in general are essential to helping kids become well rounded, confident individuals. There has been research to show that children who play instruments are more likely to become critical thinkers and better team players. I love what VH1’s Save The Music Foundation and organizations like it, are doing.

What music inspires you and why?

Dana: All music inspires me. The very essence of music is a fire that burns deep within my soul. Music has the power to touch people, invoke emotion and to bring people together. Music has power. Music is love. Music is well said to be the speech of angels. Music is a gift to us from God. When I sing I am reminded of how blessed I really am.

What moment in your life was the deciding factor that this is what you wanted to do in your life?

Dana: I’ve always known that I wanted to be an entertainer. It’s in my bones. But I remember in 1994 I was working a job that paid good but I was miserable. I got an opportunity to go to Atlanta and pursue my dreams. i quit my job and never looked back.

What’s one thing you feel people think they know about you but reality is they have no idea?

Dana: I think people see my confidence on stage and think that I’m always like that when really I am quite shy. But the stage is where I get to be somebody else.

Achievements:

I look at this word very different. I value the countless number of people that have shared their gratitude with me over plus from words that I have be blessed to produce, poems they have heard and journeys I have

touched on that ignited something in them. My achievements open eyes, feed minds, touch the spirit and invoke sub-
conscious plus conscious thought patterns. But, if you need a little material, I shall indulge in a taste. I am the founder of a poetry family called Dragon Spit in Houston TX, I have written a number of commissioned works for various events, won a few awards and have had the pleasure of turning away from allowing my earlier works to grace some Anthology’s. My deepest achievement however is the 40 thousand plus word that I have managed to accumulate for my book!

Passions:

Writing, working out, cooking, music and kids. Honestly too many to list. Motivation: Any, every plus all
things I can intake! My motivations are limitless! Music, People, Smells, Words etc, etc, etc…!

How long have has it been since you started writing poetry?

About 8 years.

What’s the inspiration for doing a book with another poet?

Life is about evolution, spiritual advancement plus I love writing from the male and female prospective. So, what better way to
displace this in print than with the opposite sex? I also, feel that the art of communication between the sexes is incomplete in the present form. We just seem to not get it! The true question is have we ever? I define “it” as the 4 L’s to success Life, Love,
Laughter plus Lust!

What is it about your partner that inspires you as you feed off each others skills?

I would have to say that I purely write to inspire and draw inspiration from all things. It is a blessing to have someone
that I can write with that is open to touch every subject. The feed is actually within the world processed between each
other.

How do you handle conflict with each other?

We really haven’t had any conflict to handle. We write when we can and if another person happens to be not in the mold we don’t. Sounds simple however it is what it is, no more no less.

What are the perks of working with another poet?

Viewing another’s work helps build your own. It also offers balanced insight when writing new poems.

Give 5 qualities that you see that are inspiring about your partner that they might not realize about. .

Inner strength, great speaking voice, submissiveness, pen balance and visual grace…

Would you work with each other on another book & why?

One should never say never so I will say possibly. It will probably not be on this scale. I have a number of personal projects that I am working on and must devote time to growing my individual BRAND!

Who decides what artwork goes with each piece & why?

I believe writing to be a free forum. We both allow our pens to flow uncensored at all times. When views differ we
communicate to elevate the experience within our ink. The artwork is selected by us both. It really depends on the
poem, the emotion we are attempting to speak and sometimes the piece just says this picture right here. After all
words possess the innate ability to speak volumes!

How would you describe your co author’s work in 5 words?

Limitless in motivational ink potential!

What are your thoughts with everything going digital how do you feel about books in the classroom becoming non-existent?

I actually mostly write inkless. Maybe a little hard to believe yet it is true. I do feel books are a forgotten tree but we also need to save the few we have left. However, the day a classroom goes bookless is the moment the already lessor fortunate will become Third World mentally. Money does equal status in every country. With that said any parent or person that doesn’t vote nay to that Bill must question the loyalty to the people, for the people and
by the people. It’s probably safe to say our government cannot afford to issue electronics to the public. Most of the books in school are singular in thought flawed, extremely out dated and don’t yield enough international history.

What would you call your writing if you were describing your style to someone hearing you for the first time?

“Color Blind” The term “Color Blind” was bestowed upon me by a reader first then listener when I was merely a Neophyte. On the flip side I would say I offer my writings to the heart and one must take what they need from the
work. I write from the Creators Vision Spiritually. Nothing is off limits and my mind is always on the clock. People, places and things inspire my keys…! Merely the Vessel I am…

Where can people hear or read your work?

I speak at the Secret Word Café’ from time to time when it permits and have been to Bamboo.Mostly now I blast
the internet poetry air waves. My work can be read on FB at Eric H. Allen and later this year I shall be finished my first Anthology. The book is titled “Evolution of Subconscious Thought” coupled with and erotic CD all to be re-leased in 2014. I also post all internet shows to FB.

If you were asked to create a showcase of poets for a network who would they be & why?

Hmmm… What type of network lol…? It depends on the level of censorship. Since my new family happens to be a great group of erotica poets, I would have to say something like HBO or Showtime. FlenardoTaylor, Kelligraphy Pens, Lee Lee Aint Misbehavin’, Karmel, Red Hulk and this list could go on for days!

The great thing about knowing so many not just poets yet beautiful writers is that we can Showcase everything and have. Spiritual, Sickness, Sex, Pain, Political etc… Writing allows one to travel the gambit and I do every single day!

Do you believe that there is a stereo type when it comes to poets & with arts in general?

But of course, art is normally frowned upon especially when it’s in its freest form. Funny that Art is view in
that way because it is said that “Art imitates life” when I see it as “Life imitating Art.” We strive to be a
Master Piece. For me I look at it as balance the term or phrase works both ways.

How did you & Karmel decide to do a book together?

The reception of our collaborative works began to inspirer listeners via internet. I would have to say we
kind of just allowed the ink to direct our actions. But when you have peeps blowing up chat rooms and
hitting the inbox with request to review poems, short stories and other items based upon work completed
with a partner, it just made perfectly imperfect sense.

What’s one thing you think people will be surprised to know about Karmel?

That erotic poetry really takes a back seat to her true love which is historical and spiritual writing. Sometimes you just find a void and fill it with ink. Her poem “Invisible Nooses” happens to be a really vivid visual look into the history of Americans.

What are your views on the lack of support Houston poets sadly get tagged with? True or false & why?

Well looking at it with an even pen both True and False. Lets tackle “FALSE” first. One must create their own brand within any business. So, if you are looking for the fans to just fall at your feet or into an event without getting your name out sorry. Even when you do get your name out times will be thinner than thin.
You have to make people believers in your craft and this is not an overnight epiphany type business. The
streets we walk be desolate at times and broken in form. Think do just about everything and then prefect your brand from the ashes of experience. Now on to the “TRUE” side of Houston poetry none support. When I started speaking spoken word I viewed a lack of love for most newbie’s and a large number of vets spoke of past glory. In truth when one elects to build a persona support is perception, taste is everything and diversity must be integrated into the voice. Never allow yourself to exist one dimensional!
