Be patientLearning to use a walker can be frustrating, so be encouraging and patient.
Help with practiceAssist the person when they change from sitting to standing.
Remind them to use the walker correctlyRemind them to use the walker to slide forward, with feet planted steadily on the ground, and not to pull themselves up.
Help with safetyWhen going down a step or curb, start with the weaker leg, and keep space between the person and the walker. Keep toes inside the walker, and avoid stepping too close to the front or tips.
Make changes around the houseSecure loose rugs, cords, and rug corners to prevent tripping or getting tangled. Remove clutter and keep floors clean and dry. Wear shoes or slippers with rubber or other non-skid soles.
